{"id":2689,"date":"2015-05-12T06:24:29","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T13:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/?p=2689"},"modified":"2015-05-13T09:10:48","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T16:10:48","slug":"on-the-way-to-homeless-bbq-in-wilson-nc-chill-travelers-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/on-the-way-to-homeless-bbq-in-wilson-nc-chill-travelers-review\/","title":{"rendered":"On The Way To Homeless &#8211; BBQ in Wilson NC &#8211; Chill Travelers Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It takes an extreme BBQ restaurant to get a review from the Chill Travelers. \u00a0Parker&#8217;s is more than worthy! \u00a0<strong>Chill Travelers Rank<\/strong> [usr 8.6]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/on-the-way-to-homeless-bbq-in-wilson-nc-chill-travelers-review\/img_1475\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2693\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2693\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1475-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1475\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1475-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1475-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1475-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On our way driving north to Maryland to go to the closing for our \u00a0Deep Forest house, Wendy said, &#8220;I read about this great BBQ restaurant in Wilson, NC. \u00a0Lets stop their for dinner!&#8221; \u00a0 Well, it turned out to be a 630 mile run the first days driving and we sure hoped it was going to be good. \u00a0The place is called Parker&#8217;s and it was worth the drive.<\/p>\n<p>So, just as a factoid, if a North Carolina BBQ place has been around more than a week, it is good food. \u00a0Whether at Lexington BBQ or R&amp;R in Concord, the pulled pork is usually hard to tell from one place to another. \u00a0They are that good. \u00a0It then boils down to style and how they do it that makes the difference.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that we noticed reading UrbanSpoon about Parker&#8217;s and many other Northeast Carolina places is that they serve\u00a0their BBQ with fried chicken and serve up a full plate of sides and usually something called Brunswick stew. \u00a0A full plate of different tastes. \u00a0Sort of Northeast Carolina Tapas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/on-the-way-to-homeless-bbq-in-wilson-nc-chill-travelers-review\/img_1472\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2690\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2690\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1472-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1472\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1472-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1472-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1472-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Parker&#8217;s is different in that you step back in time from the minute you pull into the parking lot. \u00a0First thing you notice is that it is packed even on a weekday night. \u00a0No worries though because the inside is huge but quaint with one dining room after the other meandering through the building.<\/p>\n<p>Walking in the front door, male waiters dressed in white long aprons and wearing soda jerk paper hats greet you at the front door holding it open with a Northeast Carolina rousing &#8220;Welcome.&#8221; \u00a0You get the same greeting from the owner just inside telling us to sit wherever we want. \u00a0A waiter swooped in as if he had 15 cups of caffeinated coffee, but very friendly. \u00a0Asked if we had been here before. No! \u00a0He proceeded to tell us how it worked and what was included.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/on-the-way-to-homeless-bbq-in-wilson-nc-chill-travelers-review\/img_1477\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2695\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2695 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1477-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1477\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1477-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1477-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1477-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We had the pulled pork BBQ combination with one piece of fried chicken. \u00a0It came with hush puppies, corn, corn sticks and a yellow mustard coleslaw. \u00a0This was fronted with a cup of brunswick stew. \u00a0They serve the fried chicken atop the pulled pork BBQ with different vinegar sauces on the side. \u00a0Wendy had &#8216;sweet tea&#8217; and Bob had unsweetened tea. \u00a0No beer here. \u00a0The interesting thing is that each got a pitcher of tea brought to the table and our waiter offered to bring anything that we wanted. \u00a0So, we tried the friend oysters as a sort of appetizer. \u00a0True Northeast Carolina hospitality and the accent of the waiter screamed that we were in the south.<\/p>\n<p>Like we said, if a BBQ place in North Carolina has been around for more than a week, the food is good. \u00a0Parker&#8217;s is great! \u00a0No wonder it has been around since 1946. \u00a0Two thumbs up from two that have been in every top BBQ restaurant from Texas \u00a0to east.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/on-the-way-to-homeless-bbq-in-wilson-nc-chill-travelers-review\/img_1473\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2691\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2691\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1473-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1473\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1473-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1473-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chilltravelers.com\/chill\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1473-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cFounded by brothers Graham and Ralph Parker and a cousin Henry Parker Brewer, Parker\u2019s Barbecue has for years been one of the best known names serving Eastern North Carolina style barbecue. One of the reasons for this is that Parker\u2019s originated in a town with tobacco markets. The tobacco company buyers, as they moved about their circuit, helped spread the word about the good barbecue they had encountered. Parker\u2019s name and stories about their good barbecue soon spread about the coastal plain.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason for Parker\u2019s popularity is its business site. Ask realtors what is important and they will say \u201clocation, location, location.\u201d Well Parker\u2019s has been in the right location since 1946.<\/p>\n<p>The barbecue is finely chopped by machine and seasoned in the kitchen with an Eastern North Carolina vinegar-base sauce. My preference is pulled barbecue that is more moist and in coarser pieces. However Parker\u2019s knows and understands its customers and gives them exactly what they want. And the faithful like it finely chopped or shredded, drier, leaner and lightly sauced. Parker\u2019s cooks whole hogs. The mixture of the drier hams with the shoulders along with being finely shredded, contributes to the texture of Parker\u2019s \u2019cue. If you prefer, more moisture can be added with the house sauce at the table. Be careful here. It doesn\u2019t take much additional house sauce to light up the \u2019cue and you as well.<\/p>\n<p>The slaw is yellow with lingering hints of mustard but is slightly sweet. This crisp coleslaw has a good, fresh taste and a prominent cabbage flavor.<\/p>\n<p>Parker\u2019s fried chicken will rival any at a family reunion. This is good ol\u2019 country fried chicken at its best. It has a crisp outer skin and is moist and tender. Simply, it\u2019s cooked to perfection.
